Also known as Reishi or Ling zhi (spirit plant), has long been recognized as a medicinal mushroom in Asian countries. It has profound immune-enhancing effects, and it is known to increase longevity by fighting many age-related illnesses. Since wild Reishi is rare, in the years before it was cultivated, only the richest members of Asian society could afford it. Mushrooms or fungi possess natural defense against viruses and bacteria. Penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic, comes from Penicillium fungi. Similarly, Reishi has been described to defend human body against physical threats such as viruses and bacteria, as well as emotional stressors including anxiety. Whatever the threat, Reishi helps the body to maintain balance.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Gardenia plant clears body heat by cooling blood, and alleviates irritability. In Western medical terms, Gardenia has been described to lower blood pressure and treat symptoms such as insomnia and urinary tract infections. The American Herbal Products Association has given Gardenia a class one rating, meaning that it can be consumed safely when used appropriately.
Glycyrriza glabra (Licorice)
Harmonizer of herbal formulas that increases vitality while protecting against stress-induced weight gain. This is an herbaceous legume native to Asia. Licorice root is the single most used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today. Commonly combined with other herbs, its harmonizing properties blend contrasting flavors and enhance the effectiveness of other ingredients, while reducing toxicities of the herbal formula.
Adaptogenic herb used for female hormonal imbalance, diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Rehmania has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to relieve menopause symptoms such as night sweats and hormone disruptions. A phytonutrient, caltalpol, is believed to be responsible for its ability to stimulate and balance adrenal cortical hormones. Rehmania is also used to treat insomnia, weak bones, blood lipid disorders, constipation and atherosclerosis.
Polygonum multiflorum (Fo-ti)
An antidote for hair loss and premature graying, it also strengthens muscles and bones. Fo-ti is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in Ayurvedic Medicine of India. Regarded as a rejuvenating plant, Fo-ti is thought to mitigate aging, promote longevity and optimize liver and kidney function. It is often prescribed for the treatment of age related memory problems.
