Conventional Menopause Therapy

There is no treatment for menopause other than symptom management. Commonly used prescription medications include:

  • Estrogen therapy is the most effective method for relieving hot flushes, but it can increase risk of heart disease and breast cancer.

  • Antidepressants may decrease hot flashes and help with mood instability.

  • Clonidine is a blood pressure lowering medication that can also provide relief from hot flushes.

  • Osteoporosis medications help prevent bone loss and risk of fractures.
